A clean, clear shower makes the whole bathroom feel fresh, but nobody wants to spend their weekend scrubbing it. The trick is to stop grime building up in the first place. With a few small habits and a short weekly routine, you can keep your shower looking good with very little effort.
Why little and often works
Build-up gets harder the longer it sits
Soap scum, hard-water marks and limescale start as a thin film that wipes off easily. Left for weeks, they bond to the glass and tiles and take far more work to shift.
A drier shower is a cleaner shower
Bathrooms stay damp, which encourages mould and mildew, especially in grout and silicone seals. Anything that helps the room dry faster helps keep it clean.
Daily habits (under a minute)
Squeegee the glass
Run a squeegee down the screen after your shower, top to bottom, overlapping each stroke. Removing the water before it dries is the easiest way to prevent spots.
Wipe while you’re already in there
Keep a cleaning sponge in the shower and give the glass a quick wipe while you shower. Our Shower Screen Cleaner Sponge is made for this and works with just water.
Let the air in
Run the exhaust fan during and after showering, or open a window. Leave the shower door open so the cubicle can dry out.
A five-minute weekly routine
- Wet the glass and your sponge with plain tap water.
- Wipe the screen in firm, even strokes, keeping water between the sponge and the glass. Work in small sections where you see build-up.
- Give the tiles and chrome tapware a quick wipe too (patch-test first on any surface you haven’t cleaned this way before).
- Rinse everything with clean water.
- Dry the glass with a squeegee or microfibre cloth for a streak-free finish.
A monthly check
- Look at grout and silicone seals for early signs of mould and deal with them straight away.
- For stubborn mineral spots on the glass, wipe on a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water, leave it a few minutes, then rinse well. Keep vinegar off natural stone.
- Clear hair and soap build-up from the drain.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using abrasives on glass
Scourers, steel wool and gritty powders can leave fine scratches that make glass look hazy for good.
Mixing cleaning products
Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners. The combination can release harmful gases.
Skipping the dry
Rinsing and walking away leaves water to dry into new spots. A ten-second squeegee makes a real difference.
Ignoring seals and grout
They’re where mould usually starts. A quick look each month saves a bigger job later.
Final thoughts
A sparkling shower doesn’t have to be hard work. Squeegee after each shower, keep the room ventilated and do a short water-only wipe once a week. If you’d like a sponge that lives in the shower for exactly that, try the Shower Screen Cleaner Sponge.
